Ruto’s CS Breaks Silence After Viral ‘Attacked by Goons’ Claims

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has moved to set the record straight after a video showing a violent road incident was widely shared online with claims that she was the person attacked.

Miano has categorically denied being involved in the incident, describing reports linking her to the footage as false information circulating on social media.

The controversy began after a video emerged showing a group of unidentified individuals confronting and assaulting passengers inside a vehicle during what appeared to be a road-rage confrontation. As the footage spread rapidly across social media platforms, some users claimed that one of the passengers was Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano.

However, Miano has rejected the reports and urged Kenyans not to give attention to the claims.

Responding to the speculation on Monday, August 31, the CS said misinformation can spread extremely quickly and asked members of the public to disregard the reports.

“Fake news and rumours spread like bushfire. Please, just ignore and have a fruitful week,” Miano said.

Her response effectively put to rest claims that she had been attacked while travelling to work.

What the Viral Video Shows

A review of the footage raises several questions about the identity of the people inside the vehicle.

The video does not appear to show the type of security presence normally associated with a Cabinet Secretary travelling on official duties. No armed security personnel can be seen intervening during the confrontation, despite the security arrangements typically provided to senior government officials.

The footage also does not show a lead vehicle accompanying the car.

Security arrangements for senior government officials generally include police protection, particularly when they are travelling in circumstances where their safety could be at risk. Cabinet Secretaries are ordinarily assigned security personnel for their protection while on official engagements and during transit.

The absence of such a visible security response has therefore added to questions surrounding the claims made about the occupants of the vehicle.

No Government Flag Seen on the Vehicle

Another detail attracting attention is the appearance of the vehicle itself.

The car shown in the footage does not appear to have a Kenyan national flag displayed at the front, a feature commonly associated with vehicles carrying senior state officials when travelling under official protocol.

The lack of the flag, combined with the absence of an identifiable security escort and lead vehicle, provides additional reasons to question the claim that Miano was inside the vehicle.

Government efforts in recent years have also sought to reduce the size of official motorcades and limit unnecessary public expenditure.

Under directives aimed at controlling government spending, Cabinet Secretaries’ official movements have been restricted to a smaller convoy arrangement, generally involving a lead vehicle, the vehicle carrying the senior official and a security or chase vehicle.

Such an arrangement is designed to provide protection while avoiding the large motorcades that were previously associated with senior government officials.

Miano Confirms She Is Safe

Despite the speculation generated by the video, Miano has confirmed that she is safe and well.

The Cabinet Secretary also expressed concern for the people who actually appear in the footage, wishing them safety and a quick recovery should anyone have sustained injuries during the confrontation.

Her statement comes as the video continues to generate discussion online, with many Kenyans initially believing that the incident involved the senior government official.

The episode highlights how quickly unverified claims can spread on social media, particularly when videos involving public figures are shared without sufficient context.

For now, Miano’s own statement makes it clear that she was not the woman involved in the incident depicted in the viral footage and that reports claiming she was attacked are false.
