Nairobi, Kenya – May 19, 2026 – Kennedy Kaunda, the man whose calm but firm rebuttal to two Cabinet Secretaries has taken Kenya by storm, is a prominent figure in the country’s tourism sector.Kaunda serves as the Group CEO of the East Africa Tour Guides and Drivers Association (EATGDA).
The association represents practising tour guides, driver guides, and onsite guides operating within Kenya and across East Africa’s tourist circuits. Under his leadership, EATGDA has been vocal in advocating for professional standards, better regulation, and the elimination of rogue and unlicensed operators in the tourism industry.
For years, Kaunda has actively pushed for the recognition and professionalization of tour guides. He has participated in stakeholder meetings with government officials, including county tourism departments and the national Ministry of Tourism.
He has repeatedly called for clear policies to define the role of guides, regular training programmes, and stricter enforcement against imposters who damage Kenya’s tourism reputation. His background in stakeholder representation and advocacy prepared him for the high-stakes moment on May 18, 2026.
During a joint press briefing involving Energy CS Opiyo Wandayi and Transport CS Davis Chirchir on fuel prices and the ongoing matatu strike, Kaunda stepped forward. He politely but unequivocally stated that no agreement had been reached between the government and transport stakeholders.
“With all due respect, we did say that we are going to communicate here clearly and openly that we have not agreed,” he declared, clarifying that the government’s Sh10 offer fell far short of the Sh30–Sh35 demanded by stakeholders.
The clip of his intervention went viral within hours, turning him into an overnight sensation. Social media users have praised his composure, courage, and refusal to be part of what many perceived as a staged consensus narrative.
In a follow-up interview, Kaunda downplayed the fame, saying he acted purely out of conscience after being surprised by the ministers’ claims. “With all due respect, I didn’t see this coming,” he remarked with a smile. Before his current role, Kaunda has been involved in efforts to build a stronger national platform for tour guides.
His leadership style — measured yet assertive — reflects years of navigating complex negotiations between private sector players and government agencies.
As memes and discussions continue to swirl, Kennedy Kaunda’s moment has transcended the immediate fuel debate. It now symbolises a broader shift: ordinary Kenyans, especially professionals in their fields, increasingly demanding transparency and accountability from public officials in real time.
