Tanzania Mourns Samia Suluhu’s Husband After Death in Zanzibar

Tanzania is mourning the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who passed away on Monday morning while undergoing medical treatment in Zanzibar.

The death of Tanzania’s First Gentleman was announced on September 7, 2026, by Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who said Hassan died at approximately 8:00 a.m. at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital.

According to the Vice President, Hassan had been receiving treatment after developing complications related to heart disease.

In a statement announcing the death, Ndejembi expressed his condolences to President Samia, members of the First Family, Hassan’s relatives and friends, as well as Tanzanians who have been affected by the loss.

The Vice President also disclosed that preparations for Hassan’s burial had already commenced in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan’s Private Life

Hafidh Ameir Hassan was known for maintaining a remarkably private life despite being married to Tanzania’s president.

Hassan and President Samia were married in 1978 and spent decades together. Their marriage was blessed with four children, among them Wanu Hafidh Ameir, who followed a political path and became a Member of Parliament in Tanzania.

He also said Kenya stood together with Tanzanians during the period of mourning and extended his sympathies to President Samia and her family.

Ruto called for comfort and strength for the Tanzanian leader and her family as they cope with the loss.

With Hassan’s death now officially announced, attention has turned to funeral arrangements.

Vice President Ndejembi said preparations were underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, as the family and authorities organize the final rites for the First Gentleman.

The death is expected to trigger a period of mourning within the presidential family and among Tanzanians who knew Hassan either personally or through his connection to the presidency.

For many years, Hafidh Ameir Hassan remained largely outside the public spotlight, choosing a private life despite his position as the husband of one of Tanzania’s most prominent political figures.
