Lenana School has been shut down indefinitely following a night of student unrest and tension at the prestigious national institution.
The emergency closure was communicated to parents in a series of urgent text messages sent by the school administration on Tuesday, June 2, instructing them to pick up their children immediately.
Early Morning Recall
According to communications sent out by the school principal, parents and guardians were ordered to arrive at the school starting at 8:00 AM. The administration has maintained a strict safety protocol, requiring that no student leave the compound unaccompanied.
“Kindly ensure that all students leave the school compound accompanied by a parent, guardian, or an authorized representative,” the message explicitly detailed.
The sudden decision was made following a joint crisis meeting between the school’s Board of Management (BOM) and the internal administration. The leadership pointed to a highly volatile atmosphere that disrupted the school routine on the evening of Monday, June 1.
“Following the restlessness and disturbance experienced during preps in the school last night, the Board of Management and the school administration have resolved to temporarily release all students to allow for restoration of normalcy and a comprehensive assessment of the situation,” the school statement read.
Assessing the Situation
While the administration did not immediately make the exact root causes of the “restlessness” public, the abrupt suspension of learning is intended to defuse mounting tension and prevent any potential destruction of property or risk to student safety.
The administration noted that the temporary closure will give stakeholders time to conduct a thorough investigation and run a comprehensive assessment of the situation before announcing a resumption date.
Security and education officials are expected to review the events of Monday night to establish what triggered the disturbance during evening studies.
