New Twist In Rachel Wandeto Murder Case As Detectives Make New Move

Nairobi, Kenya – May 22, 2026 — Fresh twists have emerged in the horrific murder of Rachel Wandeto, as detectives reveal they are pursuing deeper personal and financial motives rather than treating the case as purely political.
NTV Kenya reported on Thursday evening that while the victim’s prominent tattoo of President William Ruto initially fueled speculation of politically motivated violence, investigators are now closely examining money trails, phone records, and CCTV footage.
A prime suspect has reportedly been detained for 10 days as police dig into possible love-triangle angles, business disputes, or other personal conflicts. President Ruto had earlier condemned the killing, linking it to dangerous political profiling and ethnic tensions.
However, sources close to the investigation suggest the motive may be more personal than political, dampening the tribal narrative that had begun to dominate public discourse.
The brutal incident — in which Wandeto was allegedly doused with petrol and set ablaze — has gripped the nation, sparking heated debates online and accusations of incitement from various quarters.
Detectives are expected to provide more updates as forensic and digital evidence is analyzed. This latest development comes as calls grow for calm and restraint to prevent the tragic death from being weaponized for political gain ahead of the 2027 elections.
Racheal Wandeto, a gospel singer and content creator popularly known as Recho, was brutally attacked on the evening of May 16, 2026, in Mwiki, Kasarani area of Nairobi.
Three men accosted her along 11th Street near Obama Road, assaulted her, doused her with petrol, and set her on fire before fleeing the scene. She sustained approximately 70-75% body burns and was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries on May 18, 2026.
A taxi driver known to her, identified as Josiah Runjiri or Josiah Njeru Njiru, was arrested on May 20 as the main suspect and is being held for further questioning.
Although her prominent tattoo of President William Ruto initially sparked political speculation, investigators are now focusing on personal, financial, and possible love-triangle motives rather than purely political ones.
Her family has urged the public to avoid premature conclusions and politicization of the tragic incident while investigations continue. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations continues to pursue additional suspects using phone records, CCTV footage, and other forensic evidence.
