Nairobi, Kenya, June 11, 2026 — Top-performing Kenyan students are set to benefit from expanded access to world-class higher education following a new partnership between the European Union (EU) and the Equity Group Foundation (EGF).
The collaboration, formalized through a cooperation agreement signed in Nairobi on Thursday, aims to strengthen human capital development by creating structured pathways for talented students to access quality education, research opportunities, and international exposure in Europe.
The agreement was signed by EU Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger, and Equity Group Foundation Executive Chairman and Equity Group CEO, James Mwangi. The signing ceremony was witnessed by Principal Secretary for Higher Education and Research, Beatrice Inyangala, and Principal Secretary for Science, Research and Innovation, Shaukat Abdulrazak.
Under the partnership, the two organizations will work together to increase awareness of European educational opportunities among scholars in the Equity Leaders Program (ELP) and facilitate access to academic institutions across Europe.
A key component of the initiative is the annual placement of 100 Equity scholars in European universities for master’s degree programs. The initiative is expected to provide promising young Africans with access to globally recognized education, cutting-edge research opportunities, and valuable international networks.
Speaking during the signing ceremony, Ambassador Geiger described Equity Group Foundation as a natural partner due to its strong track record in promoting access to education and nurturing future leaders.
“The Equity Group Foundation, through its Wings to Fly and Equity Leaders Program, is an ideal partner for us, with our shared objectives of promoting access to quality education, holistic development and intercultural exchanges as a key driver of growth and human capital development,” she said.
Dr. Mwangi noted that the partnership reflects Equity’s commitment to developing globally competitive leaders capable of driving transformation across Africa and beyond.
“We view education not only as academic advancement but as a bridge to global networks, ideas, and leadership. These connections across continents, institutions, and people are what produce globally competitive leaders capable of transforming societies,” he said.
He added that the partnership builds on Equity’s ongoing efforts to diversify educational opportunities for scholars beyond traditional destinations and create broader international pathways.
Principal Secretary Inyangala welcomed the initiative, saying it would strengthen Kenya’s higher education sector through increased knowledge exchange, innovation, and research collaboration.
“Partnerships such as this create invaluable opportunities for our students, researchers and academics to access world-class education, advanced research, and international exposure,” she said.
The partnership will leverage the EU’s flagship education program, Erasmus+, which supports education, training, youth, and sports across Europe. Kenya has emerged as one of Africa’s strongest Erasmus+ partners, with approximately 600 Kenyan students and academics traveling annually to more than 30 European countries, while around 300 European academics visit Kenyan universities each year.
Since 2017, Kenyan institutions have participated in 38 Erasmus+ Capacity Building projects, reinforcing the country’s growing role in international higher education collaboration.
The Equity Leaders Program, established in 1998, has become one of Africa’s leading talent development initiatives. To date, more than 1,206 scholars from Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo have secured fully funded admissions to leading global universities. The program has also facilitated over 10,500 paid internships, helping scholars gain practical work experience and enhance their employability.
Officials said the partnership is expected to deepen institutional ties between African and European universities, expand scholarship opportunities, and support innovation-driven growth across the region.
The agreement comes as Kenya and the European Union mark 50 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, underscoring a longstanding partnership focused on development, education, trade, and people-centered growth.
