Mutahi Ngunyi Ignites Fury with Explosive Message to Kikuyus

Nairobi, Kenya – May 22, 2026 — Veteran political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has sparked widespread outrage after posting a strongly worded message directly addressing the Kikuyu community over the horrific death of Racheal Wandeto.
In a viral X post on May 21, Ngunyi claimed that Kikuyus “wasted 214 Ksh of EXPENSIVE fuel” — referencing the current price of a litre of petrol — to set one of their own on fire because she had a tattoo of President William Ruto.
“Dear Kikuyus: One litre of petrol is 214 Ksh. You wasted 214 Ksh of EXPENSIVE fuel and poured it on Racheal Wandeto. One of your OWN. Then you set her on FIRE Killing her. She had a tattoo of Ruto. How DARK is this? You KILLED your own, WHY? God is SETTING you up against EACH OTHER,” Ngunyi wrote.

The post has drawn sharp criticism, with many accusing the analyst of fanning ethnic hatred and politicizing a tragic death before full investigations are concluded.

Police and the DCI have reportedly ruled out a purely political motive, with some sources pointing to a possible love triangle or criminal elements, but Ngunyi’s message has nevertheless thrust the incident into the national spotlight as a symbol of deepening tribal divisions.
Social media erupted with mixed reactions: some users condemned Ngunyi for collective blame and “tribal bigotry,” while others engaged in heated counter-accusations. Several respondents reminded him of past atrocities across communities, including the 2007/2008 post-election violence, urging restraint instead of inflammatory rhetoric.
Racheal Wandeto’s killing has become a political football in an already charged environment, coming amid heightened tensions between the government and opposition figures. As of now, no official statement has been issued by the government or police in direct response to Ngunyi’s post.
However, calls are growing for authorities to address rising online ethnic incitement as Kenya heads toward more turbulent political waters ahead of 2027.The question on many lips: Is this reckless commentary, or a stark warning about the dangerous undercurrents of Kenyan politics?
