Edwin Sifuna has come out strongly to shut down claims that former President is bankrolling the Linda Mwananchi movement, telling critics to stop the talk and bring actual evidence.
The ODM Secretary General was responding to accusations that the opposition is being funded from behind the scenes, allegations that gained traction after Interior CS suggested that opposition figures are under constant surveillance by the state.
Sifuna didn’t hold back. He flipped the argument on its head, questioning how the same government claiming to monitor opposition leaders around the clock has failed to produce even a shred of proof linking him to any financial support from Uhuru.
“If they are watching us 24/7 as they claim, then they should easily show Kenyans where I’m receiving money from Uhuru,” Sifuna argued. “Why can’t they just put that evidence out there?”
Rather than dodge the issue, Sifuna chose to be direct about how the movement is funded. According to him, Linda Mwananchi runs on contributions from ordinary citizens who believe in its cause. He explained that supporters donate willingly through a paybill number provided on their official platform.
To make his point clearer, he gave a practical example. A recent demonstration in Kisumu, he said, cost about Sh3 million to organize — money that came entirely from public contributions, not from any political heavyweight.
“Do I really need Uhuru to give me Sh3 million?” he posed, dismissing the allegations as exaggerated and baseless.
Sifuna’s remarks are likely to resonate with many Kenyans who feel that the government often tries to paint opposition movements as projects of powerful individuals, rather than acknowledging the role of grassroots support.
By openly addressing the funding question, Sifuna appears keen to reinforce the idea that Linda Mwananchi is driven by wananchi themselves — not by hidden political sponsors.
