In a powerful show of solidarity, Former Chief Justice David Maraga joined hundreds of Gen Z protestors on the streets of Nairobi on Tuesday, June 25, in what has become one of Kenya’s most significant youth-led demonstrations in recent history.

Speaking during the peaceful procession, Maraga emphasized the importance of upholding the Constitution and valuing human life—core principles he believes are at the heart of the protest movement.

“We want the Constitution to be respected. We want human life to have value. That’s why we are joining this procession,” Maraga said. “I can’t see any violence here—these people are peaceful.”

His presence among the youthful demonstrators sent a strong message to authorities and political leaders that the protest movement transcends age and politics. It is, he said, a call for national reflection and a return to the principles of justice, dignity, and accountability.

Maraga, known for his firm defense of judicial independence during his tenure as Chief Justice, called on leaders to listen to the voices of young people instead of responding with force. His remarks came as civil society and international observers raised concerns over police brutality during earlier protests.

The Gen Z-led demonstrations, initially sparked by proposed tax hikes in the 2025 Finance Bill, have grown into a broader movement demanding transparency, youth inclusion, and responsible governance.

Maraga’s appearance was met with cheers and applause by protestors, many of whom expressed gratitude for his moral support.

As the country grapples with growing discontent, the involvement of respected elder statesmen like Maraga may signal a critical turning point in how Kenya navigates its democratic future—through dialogue, not repression.
