NANDI, KENYA – The Maseno University fraternity is in mourning today following the tragic death of Nick Koskei, a former Students Organization of Maseno University (SOMU) editor and a respected figure within the campus community.
Koskei, who was serving as the official photographer for Hon. Ngeno, the Member of Parliament, was among the passengers who perished in a helicopter crash earlier this evening in Nandi County.
According to preliminary reports, the helicopter had initially made an emergency landing due to poor weather conditions. Tragically, shortly after the pilot attempted to resume the journey, the aircraft crashed only 300 meters from the site of the emergency landing.
News of the accident has sent shockwaves through the Maseno University alumni network. During his tenure with the 2022/2023 SOMU leadership, Koskei was widely celebrated for his professionalism and creative vision, spearheading the production of one of the most successful student magazines in the university’s history.

In an official statement released today, Dennis Wambugu, the former SOMU Chairman (2022/2023), paid a heartfelt tribute to his former colleague.
“It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the demise of Nick Koskei. He served with diligence, leading our team to produce one of the best student magazines,” said Wambugu. “We call upon the entire Maseno University Class of 2023 to join together in mourning this legend—a man defined by his hard work and integrity.”
Friends and former classmates remember Koskei as a dedicated storyteller whose work captured the heart and soul of the Maseno student experience. As the community comes to terms with this sudden loss, messages of condolence continue to pour in from across the region.
