Nyamira MCAs have once again initiated an impeachment motion against Governor Amos Nyaribo, accusing him of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and irregular appointments. This marks yet another attempt to oust the county chief amid deepening divisions within the County Assembly.
The latest motion was filed by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, who accuses the governor of gross violations of the Constitution and other laws, alongside persistent abuse of office.
The impeachment push intensifies an already severe political crisis for Governor Nyaribo, marking the third attempt to remove him in a special sitting of the Assembly.
In September 2024, Nyaribo narrowly survived an impeachment vote by a single margin. Out of 34 MCAs present, 22 voted in favour of his removal, while 12 opposed, with no abstentions—falling short of the two-thirds threshold.
The previous year, in September 2023, he also escaped impeachment when 18 MCAs voted against his removal. Only 16 supported the motion, again failing to reach the required majority.
In the shifting political landscape of the Gusii region, former Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i has emerged as the single most influential figure capable of stabilizing Nyamira’s political turbulence. His wide networks, respected authority, and growing regional influence have increasingly positioned him as the ultimate arbiter in moments of crisis.
As the impeachment debate approaches, the only realistic path to diffusing tensions may lie in consensus and political mediation.

If Dr. Matiang’i calls the MCAs to the table—and the Governor willingly joins in a genuine effort to negotiate—there is a strong chance of brokering a compromise that averts another cycle of instability.
With his stature and ability to command respect across rival camps, Dr. Fred Matiang’i remains the one person who can help Governor Nyaribo navigate this storm—if both sides embrace consensus and mediation.
