Top Politician Who Displaced Ruto in the Past Government Now Eyeing Presidency in 2027

President William Ruto, now firmly seated as Kenya’s Head of State, is already facing early political tremors as former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i re-emerges on the national stage. Once the powerful technocrat who wielded immense influence during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, Matiang’i is quietly rebuilding his political base — signaling intentions to challenge for the country’s top seat in the 2027 General Election.

During Uhuru’s second term in office, Dr. Matiang’i rose from a diligent Cabinet Secretary to a central figure in government — effectively becoming what many described as the “de facto Deputy President.” His rapid rise followed growing tensions between then Deputy President William Ruto and President Uhuru Kenyatta, as Ruto’s role in government was increasingly sidelined.

In a bold move that shifted the balance of power, President Kenyatta in 2019 appointed Matiang’i to chair the National Development Implementation and Communication Cabinet Committee, giving him sweeping oversight over all ministries. This powerful role meant that all Cabinet Secretaries reported to Matiang’i, making him one of the most influential men in government at the time.

His authority and proximity to the President made him a target of criticism from Ruto’s allies, who accused him of undermining the Deputy President’s office. Yet, to his supporters, Matiang’i embodied discipline, efficiency, and a results-oriented approach — attributes that endeared him to many Kenyans who viewed him as a no-nonsense leader.

Since leaving office in 2022 after the Kenya Kwanza coalition swept to power, Matiang’i maintained a low profile. However, sources close to him suggest that he has been holding a series of strategic consultations across the country, meeting local leaders, professionals, and clergy in what appears to be a carefully calculated political comeback.

Recently, his political activities have become more visible in Mt. Kenya, Gusii, and parts of Western Kenya, regions that played a crucial role in past elections. His return has sparked speculation that he is positioning himself as a potential alternative to President Ruto in 2027 — possibly rallying support from leaders disillusioned with the current administration.

Observers say Matiang’i’s entry into the 2027 race could reshape Kenya’s political landscape. With his technocratic image, clean record, and experience in key ministries such as Education, ICT, and Interior, he could attract support from reform-minded citizens and civil servants who yearn for a leadership style anchored on discipline and order..

While Dr. Matiang’i has formally declared his bid, his renewed public engagements and the revival of his political networks suggest that he is testing the waters. Insiders claim he could form or join a coalition bringing together leaders from the former Azimio La Umoja camp and other emerging political movements ahead of 2027.

As the political season slowly heats up, President Ruto’s former rival in the corridors of power appears ready to step out of the shadows — this time not as a powerful Cabinet Secretary, but as a potential presidential contender. Whether Dr. Matiang’i’s quiet but deliberate moves will translate into a formidable campaign remains to be seen, but one thing is clear — the race for State House 2027 is already taking shape.
