Matiang’i on Sunday led a powerful delegation of leaders from the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the Gusii region to Opoda Farm, Siaya County, where they paid tribute to the late ODM Party Leader Raila Amolo Odinga.

Dr. Matiang’i was accompanied by UPA Party Leader and Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, MPs Clive Gisairo (Kitutu Masaba), Anthony Kibagendi (Kitutu Chache South), and Obadiah Barongo (Bomachoge Borabu). The delegation was received warmly by members of the Odinga family and other ODM officials.

Also present were former Education CS Ezekiel Machogu, former Kisii Woman Representative Janet Ong’era, former West Mugirango MP Vincent Kemosi Mogaka, and several county and regional leaders who joined the team in expressing condolences and solidarity with the Odinga family.

During the visit, Dr. Matiang’i eulogized Raila Odinga as a statesman and visionary who devoted his life to Kenya’s democracy, social justice, and devolution. He commended the late leader for his unmatched courage and commitment to the unity of the nation, adding that Raila’s legacy would continue to shape Kenya’s political future.

“We came here not just to mourn a leader, but to celebrate a man who gave his all for this country. Raila Odinga’s contribution to democracy, freedom, and governance will remain engraved in Kenya’s history,” said Dr. Matiang’i.

After the tribute visit at Opoda Farm, the delegation proceeded to Nyosia in Kisii County for the burial of Mary Basweti Nyachae, a respected matriarch of the Nyachae family. The event drew several dignitaries and leaders from across the political divide, who praised the late Basweti for her humility, generosity, and service to the community.

The twin events — the visit to Opoda and the Nyosia burial — highlight Dr. Matiang’i’s ongoing efforts to consolidate regional unity and strengthen political ties ahead of the 2027 general election, as he continues to build his national profile through engagements that emphasize peace, respect, and servant leadership.
