Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has delivered an emotional tribute to the late Raila Amolo Odinga, hailing the opposition leader as a “selfless, visionary, and transformative figure whose influence on Kenya will endure for generations.”
Speaking in an exclusive Citizen TV interview, Dr. Matiang’i reflected on his personal friendship and mentorship under Raila Odinga, recalling private meetings and valuable lessons that shaped his approach to leadership and governance.
“Raila was more than a political icon; he was my mentor and a source of inspiration,” Matiang’i said. “When I came home for holidays from the World Bank, we would have private sessions where he shared his deep understanding of Kenya’s political direction and future.”
Raila Odinga: The Mentor Behind Many Leaders
Dr. Matiang’i described Raila Odinga as a man of unmatched intellect and political insight — someone deeply familiar with Kenya’s history and always focused on transformation.
“He had a rare mastery of what was happening in the country. Raila could connect every event to the broader national story, showing how leadership and integrity must go hand in hand,” he recalled.
According to Matiang’i, Raila’s mentorship extended beyond politics — it was about character, sacrifice, and service to the people.
A Leader Who Lived for Change and Justice
Dr. Matiang’i remembered Raila as a selfless patriot who dedicated his entire life to fighting for democracy, equity, and national unity. Despite facing imprisonment and political persecution, Raila remained steadfast in his quest for justice.
“He never gave up. Even when it was tough, Raila believed that Kenya could achieve fairness, peace, and prosperity through courage and collective action,” Matiang’i said.
The late Raila Odinga, who served as Kenya’s Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013, was the founding leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and a central figure in the fight for multiparty democracy and constitutional reform.
Nation and Continent Mourn a Statesman
As Kenya and Africa mourn his death, global leaders, dignitaries, and citizens continue to send messages of condolence, celebrating Raila as “the father of modern democracy in Kenya.”
“Raila’s death is not just Kenya’s loss, but Africa’s. He believed in a united continent driven by justice and opportunity,” Matiang’i added.
The Raila Odinga Foundation, which continues his work in youth empowerment, education, and social justice, has urged Kenyans to honor his legacy by upholding the values he championed — integrity, unity, and service.
Raila Odinga’s Enduring Legacy
Dr. Matiang’i said Raila’s influence will continue to inspire generations of leaders across the continent.
“We have lost a great man, but his dream for a better Kenya and Africa will never die. Raila’s spirit will live on in our institutions, our politics, and our hearts,” Matiang’i concluded.
Preparations are ongoing for Raila’s state funeral, expected to draw attendance from heads of state, diplomats, and Kenyans from all walks of life.
