Matiang’i Gachagua Cold War Emerges: Newspaper Review

Taifa Leo Newspaper

The newspaper reveals deep cracks are emerging within the opposition camp, with close allies of former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i threatening to withdraw from the coalition if Deputy Prime Minister Rigathi Gachagua does not stop “belittling” them.

According to Taifa Leo, key figures in the Uhuru Kenyatta-Matiang’i wing — among them Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni and former Agriculture CS Peter Munya — accuse Gachagua of undermining and disrespecting leaders from the Mt. Kenya and Gusii regions within the opposition alliance.

They claimed there is a senior political figure in the coalition who has been “openly dismissing” Matiang’i’s bloc and issuing veiled warnings against him using Jubilee as a political platform for 2027.

“We cannot continue being in a coalition where our people are constantly insulted,” one of the leaders was quoted saying.

The internal wrangles now threaten to derail efforts by opposition leaders to unite behind a single presidential candidate, a move that had recently gained momentum under Kalonzo Musyoka’s leadership.

Big Picture: Political Realignments and Social Frustrations

While President Ruto’s outreach to former rivals points to a reshaping of national politics, the unfolding divisions in the opposition and the ongoing economic frustrations of youth reflect the widening gap between political promises and everyday realities.

Kenya’s political landscape took a dramatic turn on Saturday as President William Ruto revealed ongoing talks with former President Uhuru Kenyatta and opposition leader Raila Odinga, signaling an unexpected realignment ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during a development tour, President Ruto said he had held conversations with both leaders as part of his plan to unite the country and build a “broad-based government.”

“I have had conversations with Raila Odinga. I have engaged my brother Uhuru Kenyatta. I have also spoken with Gideon Moi, and I will continue to engage all leaders so that we transform this country into a first-world nation in our lifetime because it is possible,” said Ruto.

The remarks mark a major shift from his 2022 campaign message, which largely revolved around the “hustler vs dynasties” narrative that pitted him against Kenya’s political elite. Analysts view the move as a strategic attempt by Ruto to consolidate power and neutralize opposition threats as the 2027 race gathers momentum.

The Star

Away from politics, The Star newspaper has exposed a shocking network of rogue recruitment agencies exploiting job-seeking youths under the guise of foreign employment opportunities.

The investigative report reveals that hundreds of young Kenyans have fallen victim to fraudulent recruiters, some ending up in modern-day slavery, abuse, or even death abroad. Families across the country are now demanding tighter regulation of overseas job agencies and justice for victims who have vanished after being promised work in the Gulf and other regions.
