The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) marked its 20th anniversary with pomp and colour at Gusii Stadium, Kisii County, where thousands of supporters braved the cold and thronged the venue to celebrate two decades of the party’s political journey.
The event was graced by party leader Raila Odinga, Kisii Governor Simba Arati, and a host of other senior ODM officials who hailed the party’s resilience, democratic ideals, and continued role in shaping Kenya’s political landscape. Raila, in his address, thanked ODM supporters for their loyalty and vowed that the movement would remain strong and ready for future political battles.
However, notable absences were felt at the heart of the celebration. Nyamira County Senator Okong’o Omogeni, Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, Kitutu Chache South MP Antony Kibagendi, Kitutu Masaba MP Clive Gisairo, and Hon. Obadiah Barongo all skipped the event, sparking speculation among political observers. Their absence was particularly striking given the centrality of Kisii and Nyamira counties in ODM’s political base.
Despite this, the atmosphere in the stadium remained jubilant. Governor Arati rallied the crowd, emphasizing the unity of the Gusii region under ODM’s umbrella and promising to ensure the party continues to deliver for the people. Other leaders who attended praised ODM’s achievements since its formation in 2005, citing its push for constitutional reforms, devolution, and democratic accountability.
As the celebrations concluded, the message from Gusii Stadium was clear: ODM remains a dominant force, even as internal dynamics and shifting alliances continue to test its cohesion ahead of 2027.
