Why Opposition Must Unite or Hand Ruto a 2027 Walkover- Eugine Wamalwa

Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has issued a stern warning to opposition forces, cautioning that only a united front can mount a credible challenge against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Wamalwa dismissed popular political slogans and fragmented campaigns as futile weapons against the incumbent’s expanding influence, urging opposition leaders to put aside personal ambitions and forge a common strategy.

“Those thinking that slogans alone will dislodge Ruto are mistaken. The only way to defeat a sitting president with such political machinery is through unity of purpose, a shared vision, and collective strength,” Wamalwa asserted.

His remarks come amid growing concerns that Kenya’s opposition remains deeply fractured, with rival camps pulling in different directions since the 2022 polls. Analysts have long argued that Ruto’s strength lies not only in his aggressive grassroots mobilization but also in the absence of a cohesive opposition strategy.

Wamalwa’s call adds to mounting pressure on key opposition figures, including Raila Odinga, Kalonzo Musyoka, and Martha Karua, to shelve individual political egos and build a grand coalition that can effectively counter the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) juggernaut.

Political observers note that the window for coalition-building is narrowing, and unless opposition leaders heed Wamalwa’s call, President Ruto could enjoy a smooth re-election ride in 2027.

The DAP-K boss now stands as one of the loudest voices pushing for opposition unity, warning that failure to act decisively may consign rivals to the periphery of Kenya’s political landscape for another decade.
