The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has introduced a fresh twist to its promotion exercise, prioritizing teachers aged 57 and above in a new 24,000-slot promotion drive.
According to the new guidelines, promotions will no longer be pegged solely on performance and qualifications but will also take into account the age of the teacher and the number of years spent in one job group. This shift is seen as a deliberate attempt to reward long-serving teachers who have stagnated in the system.
Education stakeholders say the move will correct historical inequalities that left senior teachers stuck for decades despite their contributions. The promotions will not only motivate these teachers but also enhance their retirement packages by improving pension benefits.
Critics, however, caution that younger teachers may be sidelined, potentially delaying their career growth. Yet, education analysts insist that the TSC’s policy provides much-needed justice to those who have carried the education sector for years without recognition.
The promotion exercise is expected to be one of the most impactful in recent years, reshaping how Kenya values experience, loyalty, and service in education.
