There has been a stand-off and disagreement on the proposed location of Nyamira University after residents, leaders, and various interest groups disagreed over where the institution should be constructed.
The matter sparked heated debates in public forums, gatherings, and political rallies, as each side argued for the economic and developmental benefits the university would bring. Pro-Sironga leaders insisted that its central location and accessibility made it the most viable option, while Kiabonyoru supporters argued that its available land was more suitable for expansion and long-term growth.
After months of back-and-forth, in a post on social media South Mugirango MP Silvanus Osoro affirms that the 52 acres in Kiabonyoru have been secured and declared sufficient for the construction of the university. “The land inadequacy question has been put to rest. The university will be built in Kiabonyoru, and Sironga will not be left behind — another project will be set up there to help expand the town,” he said.
Osoro further revealed that the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) will take over the site from Thursday this week, with groundwork expected to begin immediately. “Construction will start as soon as possible. Matunda yameanza kutokea! Good luck, Minto!” he added, signaling the government’s commitment to fast-track the long-awaited development.
The resolution marks the end of a prolonged stalemate that had threatened to stall the multi-billion-shilling project. Residents of Nyamira County have welcomed the news with cautious optimism, hoping the university will boost education standards, create jobs, and stimulate business in the region.
