Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has cautioned public servants against openly opposing the government, terming such conduct illegal and unconstitutional.
Speaking on Monday during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum in Narok, Murkomen stressed that all public officers must respect the administration in power, regardless of personal political beliefs.
“Hakuna chief, or Assistant Chief, or a police officer, atapatikana akiongea mambo against the government of the day. Hakuna. It is illegal and unconstitutional,” he said.
The CS warned that public servants engaging in political sloganeering or insulting the President risk immediate dismissal. He gave examples of officers chanting political slogans or questioning the government’s legitimacy, saying such behavior is incompatible with public service.
“Tukipata police officer anatusi rais, anaimba slogans za siasa…that police officer or public servant should be fired immediately,” Murkomen stated.
He emphasized that the rule applies not only to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza administration but also to previous and future governments.
“I’m not saying because of this government…even the previous government and the government to come, lazima ukichoose to serve in public service, you must respect the government,” he said.
Murkomen reiterated that while public servants retain the right to vote, they cannot participate in active political campaigns. Their primary duty, he added, is to understand and implement the policies of the sitting government.
The remarks come amid growing calls for discipline and neutrality among public officers, especially those in sensitive positions like law enforcement.
