The government is set to launch a nationwide promotion exercise for teachers, a move aimed at addressing years of stagnation within the profession. Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok made the announcement during a stakeholders’ meeting, stating that the initiative is designed to reward dedicated educators who have remained in the same job groups for extended periods without upward mobility.
According to PS Bitok, the exercise will be conducted in collaboration with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and will prioritize fairness, transparency, and merit-based evaluation. “Many of our teachers have served diligently without promotion, some for more than a decade. This initiative will ensure that their hard work is recognized and that we retain talent in our classrooms,” Bitok said.
The promotion drive is also expected to improve teacher morale and enhance the quality of education across the country. Education experts have long pointed to stagnation and limited career progression as key factors demotivating educators, particularly in remote and underserved areas.
The government has committed to allocating the necessary resources to ensure the smooth implementation of the initiative. Bitok further emphasized that promotions will take into account performance appraisals, qualifications, and years of service.
Teachers’ unions have welcomed the announcement, describing it as long overdue and urging the government to follow through with action. The TSC is expected to release detailed guidelines on the promotion criteria and application process in the coming weeks.
The exercise is set to begin before the end of the currents school term.
