ODM and UDA Lay Groundwork for 2027 Coalition Through 10-Point MoU

Share

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is positioning itself to ensure full implementation of a 10-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA) — a strategic alignment that could culminate in a pre-election pact ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Sources close to both President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga confirm that discussions are ongoing to solidify the political cooperation. The March 7 MoU outlines a broad governance and reform agenda, including the implementation of the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report, inclusive public appointments, economic investment in youth, and a renewed fight against corruption.

The parties have begun operationalizing the agreement through a joint roadmap featuring youth employment initiatives, compensation of victims of political violence, devolution support, and legislative collaboration in Parliament. Technical teams from both camps are working on strategy, with ODM already forming a task force to monitor implementation.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and UDA deputy party leader Kithure Kindiki have hinted at a powerful political formation if ODM joins forces with UDA for 2027. ODM leaders, including MPs Mark Nyamita and Sam Atandi, have echoed similar sentiments, suggesting that supporting President Ruto’s re-election bid may be on the table.

Odinga, while reaffirming ODM’s role in the government until 2027, insists that any political decision beyond that lies with party members. “We are not just going for the ride,” he said. “We have clear expectations and benchmarks.”

The ODM-UDA alliance appears to be gaining momentum, with bipartisan cooperation in Parliament led by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, as well as the inclusion of youth and civil society in planned national conventions.
