Relief To University Students on Hostel Fee As Senators Intervine

Share

There are calls for the government to intervene and reduce the soaring accommodation fees charged by public universities, some of which now demand up to Sh40,000 per semester.

The senators have raised concerns over the burden these fees are placing on students and their families, particularly those from low-income backgrounds.

The lawmakers’ appeal follows a notable increase in hostel fees over the past four years. They are now calling on the Ministry of Education to explain the rationale behind the hikes, questioning the justification for such drastic adjustments.

The senators argue that the increases are ill-timed, especially considering the prevailing economic hardships that many Kenyan families are facing.

According to the senators, the rising costs are not only putting higher education out of reach for many but also undermining efforts to make public universities accessible and inclusive.

They emphasized the importance of affordability and safety in student accommodation and urged the government to maintain the traditional model where public universities offer subsidized rates.

The lawmakers fear that if the trend continues unchecked, it could lead to increased dropout rates and further deepen inequality in access to higher education. They propose that the Ministry of Education explore alternative funding models or subsidies to relieve the burden on students.

As discussions continue, students and parents alike are watching closely, hopeful that the government will step in to restore affordability and ensure that public education remains a pillar of opportunity for all Kenyans.
