An autopsy has been conducted on the body of a patient who was brutally murdered inside a ward at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), shedding new light on a shocking incident that has sent ripples across the country’s health sector.
The deceased, whose identity has been confirmed as Edward Maingi Ndegwa, was undergoing treatment at KNH when he was allegedly attacked and killed by another patient within the same ward. The circumstances surrounding the murder remain unclear, but police say preliminary investigations point to a violent confrontation between the two patients.
The main suspect in the killing, identified as Kalombotole, was on Monday arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts, where police sought more time to complete investigations. The court granted the prosecution’s request to detain the suspect for 21 days at Industrial Area Remand Prison to allow detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to conclude their inquiries.
KNH management has expressed deep shock at the incident, stating that it is cooperating fully with authorities to ensure justice is served. “This is a highly unfortunate and isolated incident. We are reviewing our security protocols within wards to prevent a repeat of such a tragedy,” a hospital official said.
The case has sparked public concern over patient safety in public hospitals and the need for tighter surveillance and mental health evaluations for admitted patients.
Further updates are expected as investigations continue.
