Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i has dismissed claims that the opposition is responsible for the recent wave of protests across Kenya, urging leaders to focus on addressing the root causes of public discontent instead of pointing fingers.
Speaking to a gathering of Kenyans in the diaspora during an event in Baltimore, Maryland, Matiang’i said it was misleading and unfair to blame the opposition for the unrest that has swept through various parts of the country in recent weeks.
“The protests are a reflection of the people’s frustrations with the current socio-economic conditions. Blaming the opposition is simply a way of avoiding accountability,” Matiang’i told the audience.
He further stated that instead of scapegoating, the government should listen to the voices of the citizens and engage in meaningful dialogue to find lasting solutions.
Matiang’i, who has kept a low political profile since leaving office, emphasized the importance of upholding democratic values, including the right to peaceful protest. He noted that civil unrest often stems from unfulfilled promises, poor service delivery, and governance challenges—not from political mobilization alone.
His remarks come at a time when the government has intensified crackdowns on protests, blaming opposition leaders for inciting public disorder.
Diaspora Kenyans in attendance applauded Matiang’i’s message, saying it echoed the sentiments of many back home.
The former CS also called for unity and respect for constitutional freedoms as the country navigates challenging economic and political times.
