A highly anticipated political tour by Hon. Dr. Fred Matiang’i across the Mt. Kenya region has been cancelled.
The visit, which was set to take place from July 10th to 12th, 2025, under the banner of the Party of National Unity (PNU) — Change Movement, was expected to galvanize support ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Dr. Matiang’i, who was to be hosted by former Meru Governor and ex-Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture Peter Munya, was scheduled to address rallies and engage with residents in over 15 key towns across Isiolo, Meru, and Laikipia counties. The tour itinerary included stops in:
- Thursday, July 10: Isiolo, Ruiri, Meru Town (Makutano)
- Friday, July 11: Kariene, Nkubu, Muthara, Kangeta, Laare, Maili Tatu, Maua
- Saturday, July 12: Athi, Mikinduri, Kianjai, Timau, Nanyuki
However, while addressing the media earlier today, Munya confirmed that the tour was called off due to rising tension and fear of attacks by organized groups.
“We made this difficult decision after assessing the current situation on the ground. With the heightened insecurity witnessed during recent protests, we could not risk the safety of our leaders and supporters,” Munya stated.
This cancellation comes amid a volatile political climate, with parts of the country recently rocked by demonstrations. Supporters of the movement have expressed disappointment but emphasized the importance of peace and security over political showmanship.
Organizers have promised to announce a new date once calm is restored.
