Okero Allies Boycott as Nyabaro Chairs First Nyamira Assembly Sitting

Hon Thaddeus Nyabaro on Tuesday chaired the first official sitting of the Nyamira County Assembly following the impeachment of former Speaker Enock Okero, whose removal was recently upheld by the High Court in Bomet.

The court ruling brought closure to a protracted eight-month political wrangle that had stalled legislative operations in the county. Okero was impeached by Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) over allegations of abuse of office and misconduct—charges he consistently denied.

Taking up the mantle as acting speaker, Nyabaro used his maiden address to call for unity and a renewed commitment to public service. “This is a moment to turn the page and refocus our energy on the people of Nyamira,” he said. “We must restore the dignity of this House and deliver on the promises we made to our residents.”

Nyabaro emphasized the need for accountability and respect for diverse opinions within the assembly. He noted that political divisions had hindered service delivery and challenged MCAs to put aside personal interests for the good of the county.

His speech was received with cautious optimism, with several MCAs nodding in agreement. Observers say his leadership could help bring stability to the assembly, which has faced criticism from civil society groups over infighting and legislative inaction.

However a number of MCAS allied to the former speaker Enock Okero did not show up for the first session.

Residents of Nyamira are now watching closely to see whether the assembly will move beyond the political tension and begin addressing pressing issues such as healthcare, infrastructure, and youth unemployment.

With Nyabaro at the helm, the County Assembly enters a new chapter—one that could either rebuild public trust or deepen disillusionment.
