Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has officially taken his 2027 presidential campaign beyond Kenyan borders, launching a new phase of diaspora engagement with a town hall meeting in Texas, USA. The event, held on June 15, 2025, at DFW Celebrations in Irving, brought together a vibrant crowd of Kenyans residing in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, all eager to hear his vision for Kenya’s future.

In his address, Matiang’i emphasized the critical role the diaspora plays in national development, stating, “We cannot build a future for Kenya without the diaspora.” The forum, themed Shaped by Voices at Home and Abroad, reflected his commitment to inclusive leadership that integrates both domestic and diaspora perspectives.

Matiang’i, who recently resigned from his position at the World Bank to fully commit to his presidential bid, underscored the growing influence of Kenyans living abroad. He highlighted their contributions through remittances, investments, and expertise, positioning them as key partners in shaping Kenya’s socio-economic and political landscape.

The former minister promised that under his leadership, diaspora voices would not only be heard but actively involved in policymaking. He proposed streamlined government services for Kenyans abroad, better investment opportunities, and stronger diplomatic ties to ensure their rights and interests are safeguarded.

As the 2027 race gains momentum, Matiang’i’s move to engage the diaspora signals a broader strategy to mobilize support beyond Kenya’s borders. His Texas visit marks the beginning of a series of international engagements aimed at galvanizing the estimated three million Kenyans living overseas.

With the diaspora increasingly seen as a powerful voting and economic bloc, Matiang’i’s outreach could become a crucial pillar in his bid to succeed President William Ruto.
