A Nairobi court has released two suspects previously detained in connection with the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Charles Ong’ondo Were, who was assassinated on April 30, 2025. Among those freed is the late MP’s driver, Walter Owino.
The prosecution could like to use them as state witness though investigations remain ongoing
MP Were was fatally shot near the City Mortuary roundabout along Ngong Road as he left Parliament. According to police reports, two assailants on a motorcycle trailed his vehicle before one approached and fired multiple shots at close range. The attackers fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has indicated that the killing was premeditated. Investigators have reconstructed the MP’s movements from Parliament to the location of the shooting, yielding significant leads. CCTV footage reportedly shows the assailants trailing the MP’s vehicle from the moment he left Parliament.
The release of the suspects, including Owino, has sparked public concern and calls for justice. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), under which Were was elected, has demanded swift and thorough investigations to bring the perpetrators to book.
As the investigation continues, authorities urge anyone with information related to the case to come forward. The DCI has appealed to the public for assistance, emphasizing the importance of community cooperation in solving the case.
