Over 300 students at Nyambaria Boys’ High School in Nyamira County are counting heavy losses after a fierce fire razed a dormitory in the early hours of Tuesday morning, May 27.

The blaze, which reportedly broke out around 4:00 am—while students were attending their routine morning prep—quickly consumed the structure, reducing mattresses and personal belongings to ashes.

The school chief principal Charles Onyari while addressing the press confirmed the incident, reported that there are no casualties

“The inferno raged until dawn,” said one eyewitness. “It was a terrifying sight, and the students are shaken.”

The Nyamira County fire brigade responded to the emergency, managing to contain the fire before it spread to adjacent buildings. However, the affected dormitory, located near the school’s kitchen area, was completely destroyed.

School officials and county authorities have since launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, with early concerns pointing to the proximity to the kitchen as a possible factor.

Nyambaria Boys’ High School is celebrated for its academic excellence. In 2022, the institution captured national attention after all 488 candidates in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams achieved a mean score of 10.8975—ranking the school among the best in the country.
