Nyamira Boda Boda Riders Protest

Boda Boda riders in Nyamira County on Monday staged a peaceful protest outside the Governor’s office, demanding urgent action from the county government over poor road conditions, lack of designated sheds, and inadequate street lighting.

Led by their chairman Bernard Orindo, the riders expressed frustration with what they termed as long-standing neglect by the county administration. Holding placards and chanting slogans, the riders vowed not to pay for the mandatory Boda Boda stickers issued by the county until their grievances are addressed.

“We face daily challenges due to poor road networks, especially during the rainy season. Our motorcycles get damaged, and passengers are at risk,” said Mr. Orindo. “We have no sheds to shelter from the rain or sun, and most roads are not lit, making our work dangerous at night.”

The riders also decried the continued collection of revenue by the county government without corresponding improvements in infrastructure and services. They accused the administration of ignoring their repeated calls for better working conditions.

This is not the first time Boda Boda operators in Nyamira have clashed with the county leadership. In previous years, there have been several stand-offs over similar concerns, with little to no action taken by the authorities.

The protest briefly disrupted activities at the county headquarters, drawing the attention of security personnel who maintained order as the riders aired their grievances.

The Nyamira County Government had not released an official statement in response to the protest.

The riders say they will continue pushing for change until their needs are met, warning that failure to act could lead to more sustained demonstrations in the coming weeks. They are calling on Governor Amos Nyaribo to personally address their concerns and provide a clear action plan.
