Police confirmed the arrest of Edwin Oduor Odhiambo, alias Abdul Rashid, and Dennis Sewe Munyasi late Tuesday night. The two were picked up from a residence in the Mihang’o area of Kayole, Nairobi, and identified as persons of interest in the fatal shooting of the second-term lawmaker.
Detectives noted that the pair gave conflicting statements regarding the events surrounding the April 30 attack, in which MP Were was shot five times while stuck in traffic near City Mortuary. Notably, both the driver and bodyguard escaped unharmed during the assault, raising suspicion among investigators.
The MP’s bodyguard reportedly jumped out and briefly chased the gunman on foot before returning to the vehicle and helping rush the MP to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
During a search related to their arrest, police recovered two pistols—a Retay Falcon and a Sarsilmaz—along with nine rounds of 9mm ammunition, a bag, and shoes believed to have been used during the crime. These items have been submitted for forensic examination.
The arrest brings the total number of suspects in custody to six, including a police officer and four other individuals. Investigators are probing links between the suspects and an organized criminal group allegedly operating in Eastlands, Nairobi.
MP Were’s death has shaken the nation, with growing calls for justice and transparency in the ongoing probe.
