A junior secondary school teacher in Nyamira County is recovering in hospital after allegedly being brutally assaulted by his school Headteacher for reporting to work late.

The shocking incident, which occurred in Ikonge, has sparked outrage among educators and union officials, with calls for swift action against the principal.

Vincent Onyancha, the victim, recounted the horrifying attack, saying that the Headteacher stormed into his classroom while he was teaching and began physically assaulting him in full view of his students.

“I was a little late to school, and the headteacher came into class and beat me while I was teaching. He kicked me and slapped me, then dragged me to his office and continued to descend on me with blows,” Onyancha told Chipuko Digital journalist.

The violent attack left him with injuries, forcing him to seek medical attention at a hospital in Ikonge. The disturbing incident has sent shockwaves through the teaching fraternity, raising concerns about violence in schools—this time not between students but among educators themselves.

Officials from the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) have strongly condemned the assault, terming it a gross violation of Onyancha’s rights and professional ethics.

The union is now demanding immediate disciplinary action against the principal, warning that teachers in the county will down their tools if justice is not served.

“This is unacceptable! No teacher should face violence in their place of work. We demand that the Teachers’ Service Commission (TSC) acts swiftly and decisively. If no action is taken, teachers will boycott work in protest,” a KUPPET official stated during a press briefing in Ikonge.

Nyamira County’s TSC Director, Erick Magak, confirmed that the matter has been brought to their attention and that an investigation has been launched.

“We have received the complaint and are handling it in accordance with the law. Investigations are ongoing, and appropriate action will be taken,” Magak said.

As the case unfolds, educators and the public are keenly watching to see whether justice will be served. Will the principal face disciplinary action, or will this shocking case be swept under the rug?
