Recently, a senator from Nyandarua named John Methu has demanded that President William Ruto step down immediately, citing constitutional violations and national security concerns.

On Friday, January 17, 2025, Senator Methu expressed serious concerns about recent accusations made by Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi. Muturi claimed that Leslie Muturi, his son, had been kidnapped by the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and had only been freed following President Ruto’s intervention.

On June 22, 2024, Leslie was reportedly kidnapped by armed men in Nairobi. President Ruto reportedly gave NIS Director-General Noordin Haji the order to liberate him.

Senator Methu declared that President Ruto has “lost the moral authority and character” to govern the country in the wake of these disclosures. Methu went on to say that the president’s complicity in the kidnapping and subsequent release of people suggests that there is an illegal abduction team working outside the law.

Kenyans are extremely concerned about the charges, and many are starting to question the credibility of national security agencies.

As per political analysts, these accusations can lead to demands for responsibility and more examination of the government’s functions.

Neither President Ruto nor NIS Director-General Noordin Haji have yet to formally address the accusations.

Before President Ruto’s involvement resulted in Leslie’s release, Public Service CS Justin Muturi described his unsuccessful attempts to find his son, which included contacting several high-ranking authorities.

The accusations made by CS Muturi and the subsequent resignation call by Senator Methu have put the Kenyan government under intense scrutiny.

Finally, as the nation awaits an official response, the episode emphasizes how important transparency, respecting constitutional ideals, and defending individuals’ rights are to maintaining public trust in democratic institutions.
