Several people are feared dead and 10 others injured in Koromey, Mandera County after a bus they were travelling in hit an explosive device.
The bus had taken the Lafey-Mandera town route when the accident took place on Wednesday morning.
Those who are injured have been rushed to the Mandera County Referral Hospital. Reports indicate that four people among the injured are in critical condition while others yet to be confirmed raising fears that the numbers of fatalities may go up.
Regional Commissioner for North Eastern Nicholas Ndalana, said that everything is under control adding that security officers have been dispatched to the neighboring county border to pursue the attackers suspected to be Al Shabaab militants even though the group have not claimed to be responsible for the attack.
The incident of the attack happens on the last day of KCPE with sources revealing that a police car patrolling the area during the national exams period was the target.
Ndalana requested the county residents to surrender any information on planned attacks they may have to the police. He said that the attackers may have planned attacks in the region as the Muslims approach the Holy Month of Ramadhan.
On the 11th of January, the Al Shabaab militants attacked and sprayed bullets on a bus then kidnapped three people. The incident prompted Ali Roba the Governor for Mandera to protest measures taken by the national government in fighting terror.
At that time, the governor was quoted saying that the Al Shabaab militants had mounted roadblocks in the county and they were controlling more than 50 percent of the county even to the collecting of protection fees from the business and livestock of the residents. The Governor also said that the group had paralyzed education as well causing only 166 schools out of 295 in the county to open.
