Manchester City seem to be taking the lead in the race to sign Senegal International and Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly. The 29 years old has been the subject of intense transfer speculation for a move away from Naples for quite some time now. With the best football clubs all over Europe now weighing in on their options of signing the best defender in Italian Football for about three or four years running. But it now seems that Manchester City are now flexing their muscles harder even as they strengthen their chances of landing the highly rated center back.
Reports in England and Italy suggest that Pep Guardiola is keen to have the deal of bringing Koulibaly a triple swoop. That he is willing to have his two best, Nicholas Otamendi and Oleksander Zinchenko, be part of the deal to bring Koulibaly to the Etihad. This is given the fact that Napoli have also expressed their interest in both Otamendi and Zinchenko, and thus the two could help catalyze City’s deal for Koulibaly even further. Napoli have valued the Senegalese international at €100 million and they are willing to listen to offers from all interested parties.
Koulibaly has also attracted the interest of City’s rivals Manchester United, EPL champions Liverpool, and London rivals Chelsea and Arsenal. With Arsenal taking a seemingly back seat as they closely monitor RB Leipzig’s solid centre back Dayot Upamecano. A move to Spanish giants Real Madrid or Barcelona has also been widely discussed, but Koulibaly has maintained his cool and composure at Napoli and left his agent to do the transfer talking and walking. Football fans from his native country Senegal will also be keenly following up on his transfer, given his immense value at the national team.
Of notable concern in all this is Manchester City’s Nicholas Otamendi. He is increasingly falling out of favour at the Etihad, with Pep Guardiola preferring John Stones and Aymeric Laporte over him. That not even Laporte’s frequent injuries could guarantee him a first team position, with Guardiola preferring to use midfielder Fernandinho over him at defense. An issue that may force Otamendi to seek first team football elsewhere amid the growing uncertainty in Pep’s dressing room. As for Oleksander Zinchenko, he may just be part of a scheme to help him land first team football chances more often.
