Since the outbreak of the dreaded coronavirus pandemic, many people have lost their jobs as the most businesses continue to count loses.
In Kenya, many media houses have laid down their workers including the high profile journalists and media practitioners.
NTV news anchor Ken Mijungu has been sacked by the Nation Media Group.
Addressing his fans through his personal tweeter handle, Mijungu claims that he was fired because of questioning the intended mass retrench of workers at the Nation Media Group.
“The axe fell NTV newsroom and I was on its way. 7 years in those corridors summed up in a two page letter of termination. We live to fight another day. Thanks to God, He remains the greatest, thank you @ntvkenya for the opportunity and thank you for always staying tuned, ” Mijungu wrote in his twitter page.
The Nation Media group had earlier announced its plan to layoff some of its workers. The move was was mainly to due to the reduced revenue caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
On 1st July this year, the NMG, through a statement disclosed that it was going through hard times as the pandemic had greatly affected the country’s economy. “New reality necessitates the re-engineering of Nation Media Group to accelerate its digital transformation.
In this journey, the Group seeks to be innovative, agile and adaptive with the objective to take up leadership in the mobile publishing landscape In Africa. This will include focusing on resourcing people in new areas critical for the Group as it moulds itself to win in the future.
Regrettably, this will result in a reduction of our workforce. This Is an extremely difficult decision in view of the prevailing circumstances,” part of the statement reads.
The pandemic has seen some of the big personalities in the media industry losing their jobs.
Barely a month ago, Mediamax company fired some of their workers including Felix Odiwuor,alias Jalango and Betty Kyalo. The move was to reduce the expenditure and workforce in the company. It is believed that more journalists are about to lose their jobs if no measure will be taken to combat the further spread of the Covid-19 which has continued to deteriorate the economy.
