Former Majority Leader Aden Duale wants the Interior Ministry to explain why stateless youths in Garissa and Wajir are yet to be issued with Identify Cards.
The Garissa Township Mp urges the Interior Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiang’i , to provide the report of the task force formed to oversee the issuance of IDs.
The task force was formed in August Last year to develop a procedure of vetting and verifying the eligibility criteria for the statelessness Kenyans.
The affected group was to present their parents’ citizenship documents information.The task force was to check with local elders,chiefs and government agencies to verify that the information given was true.
“The verification was done but since then nothing had come of it.The difficulty in obtaining IDs means these Kenyans can not access employment, join higher education institutions, engage in lawful businesses, open bank accounts and travel across the country,” he said.
The MP urged Matiang’i to provide the timelines on when he will implement the directive on the registration of person’s in the named areas.
The refugees are currently registered with the UNHCR.
The MP wants the Interior Ministry to provide the Committee with details when the youths will be provided with IDs.
