Karen Ward Member of the County Assembly, David Mberia, was on Thursday the 25th of February sentenced to serve a three-year jail term after he was found guilty of receiving a Sh. 200 000 bribe from a Nairobi-based businessman.
The ward representative was charged with the offense of receiving the bribe in order to take the businessman’s side during an investigation that was conducted by an Assembly committee concerning a piece of land that the businessman had grabbed from a school.
The judgment that was delivered by the Nairobi Anti-Corruption Court Magistrate Thomas Nzioka, however, gave Mberia an option to pay a fine of Sh. 700, 000. In his judgment, Nzioka has indicated that the MCA should be expelled from holding any public office and has therefore instructed the court to serve the speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly with a copy of the judgment for immediate action.
Mberia was charged alongside Ibrahim Njihia of Woodley ward and Jared Okoth of Mathare North ward both of whom were acquitted.
