Government Ponders On HELB And Online Learning As Universities Set To Reopen In 2021

In yet another blow to students in higher learning institutions,Education Cabinet Secretary Prof George Magoha reiterated that all higher learning institutions that do not meet Covid-19 compliant protocols shall remain closed until 2021. In his press yesterday,Prof Magoha revealed that a good number of higher learning institutions do not have adequate Covid-19 mitigation measures in place.


For this fact,they cannot reopen for continued learning as they are. Although these higher learning institutions’ final decision would be based upon the guidance from the Ministry Of Health,majority of these institutions are currently not position to guarantee for the safety of their learners and stuff members should they choose to reopen now.

Hence,the adoption of of a raft of resolutions by his ministry to help guide their reopening. Top on the list of resolutions is that all higher learning institutions will reopen for face-to-face learning in January 2021. Prof Magoha urged the institutions to keep offering online learning,online graduations and online examinations.

In addition,final year students to be prioritized so that they can finish up and graduate. He urged other universities to follow the steps of Dedan Kimathi University which has realized a success in the virtual orientation.

Preparations should be in line with set Ministry of Health guidelines and checklist. Finally,the government was pondering on how best to support online learning,with the help of HELB,to help students in the acquisition of online learning facilities and resources. This comes a few days after President Kenyatta had directed the Education stakeholders to chant a way forward for the reopening of higher learning institutions. Previously, primary and secondary schools were set to reopen in 2021.
