George Floyd Murder Suspect Charged With Tax Evasion


The former Minneapolis police officer accused of murdering African-American man George Floyd has been charged with multiple felony counts of tax evasion.

Derek Chauvin and his wife, Kellie Chauvin are inculpated of failing to report income from various jobs, and allegedly owe nearly $38,000 (£30,000) to Minnesota state.

The officer was caught on camera kneeling on George Floyd for eight minutes before he died in May. The acted lead to mass protests against police brutality. The (Black lives matter) went on for a while, fighting against discrimination on Black people. People from all races sought equal retreatment and reforms in the police force.

Mr.Chauvin lost his job and now faces charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter. Three other officers were fired alongside him and charged with aiding and supporting murder.

On Wednesday the two Mr. Chauvin and his wife, Kellie Chauvin,(a Laos-born former Mrs. Minnesota winner )were each charged in Washington County with six counts of deceitful tax returns and three counts of aiding and abetting failing to file state tax returns.

The Chauvin’s are accused of underreporting their joint income by $464,433 from 2014 to 2019. This includes money Mr.Chauvin made doing off-duty security work and weekend shifts at a restaurant.

Prosecutor Imran Ali said that the amount of tax they owe the state could rise as investigations continue. In a statement, County Attorney Pete Orput said failure to file and pay taxes was “taking money from the pockets of citizens of Minnesota. He said that regardless of any position one holds no one is above the law.
