On Thursday July 16, Federation of Kenyan Football (FKF) chair Nick Mwendwa announced that a new betting firm has come to an agreement to sponsor the desperate league.
Speaking through his official account @Nmwenda, Nick said that betking, a betting firm from Nigeria, will sponsor the Kenya premeir for 5 years as per the contract. The firm has agreed to give 1.2 billion kenya shillings to the federation which means that each team will have a Lion’s share of around 8-5 million per year.
Betking would not only sponsor the premier league but also NSL and the women league.
Speaking to Radio citizen, Mwendwa said that as time goes by every league shall have their sponsor and betking is just the beginning. The FKF chair could not hide his joy as he tweeted severally expressing how the league will acquire a new shape and hence regain it’s competitiveness.
Some teams like Sony Sugar were forced to give walk overseas to their opponents for lacking finances to sponsor their matches I.e transport and allowances. Most players quited their teams when they failed to pay their allowances and some club chair had to intervene in some cases where the Landlords locked the players rentals demanding rent.
Betking is good news that gives hope to teams that they will be able to participate fully. Many football fans have congratulated Mwendwa for bringing in the site and some even went on to campaign for him as the elections near.Betking will now be the official sponsors of Kenya premier League.
