Three county governments have suspended the issuance of new development permits around the Konza Technopolis area.
The three counties, Machakos, Kajiado and Makueni a joint statement, said the permits fall in the area that is falling within the ten-kilometer radius named ‘Konza Planning Zone’.
The suspension immediately takes effect and will go for 90 days.
The decision was to enable a newly constituted Inter-County Joint Physical and Land Use Planning Committee to come up with a plan that will provide guidelines and standards for regulation of practices for land use and general development within the zone.
The CS for Interior, Fred Matiangí, indicated that there was need for the devolved governments working together in protecting the ecosystem around Konza Technopolis for value to be delivered to investors and properties around the Special Planning Zone.
The meeting scheduled by Matiang’i was attended by the three governors namely Kivutha Kibwana, Alfred Mutua and Joseph Ole Lenku.
The ICT CS Joseph Mucheru and Farida Karoney, the CS for Lands were also present.
The three which are in consultation with the national government will come up with a mutually agreed spatial development framework for symbiotic and sustainable co-existence between the Konza Technopolis and the areas falling within the jurisdiction of the three counties.
The Committee is consisting of the respective County Executive Committee Members responsible for physical and land use planning matters, co-opted representatives from the relevant National Government Ministries, Departments and Agencies and the Director-General of Physical and Land Use Planning who will be the ex-officio member and the co-ordinator of the planning activities.
The Inter-County Physical and Land Use Development Plan formulation will largely consist the review of the Approved Development Plan and will adopt a highly consultative and participatory process.
