The importation of the genetically modified maize has continued to cause heated exchange between leaders affiliated to the government and the opposition.
Trade cabinet secretary Moses Kuria statement that Kenyans will die whether they take GMO food staffs or not has been criticized by leaders in Azimio.
Moses kuria asserted,” in view of the food situation in the country, I shall be signing instruments to allow duty free imports of GMO and non GMO Maize for the next 6 months.”
In a tweet controversial lawyer Miguna Miguna, rejected the move to import GMO foods terming the move as reckless and it was not informed by wide consultation.
” I say a firm NO to the mad rush to import GMO Maize and other foods to Kenya. I believe that it’s irresponsible and amounts to recklessness on the part of the Kenya Kwanza government. Such national policy shifts should be preceded by wide national consultations and debates!” Miguna said.
In a press statement Raila Odinga urged Parliament to take a lead in opposing the importation of genetically modified food stuffs.
“Moses Kuria’s remarks on this matter are regrettable. To say that even without GMOs, Kenyans will die anyway is a mockery to the people of Kenya,” Raila added in the statement.
