On Thursday night, April 29, Arsenal were welcomed by Villarreal at the Estadio de la Ceramica for the first leg game of the Europa League semi final.
The gunners ended up losing 2-1. All eyes are now set on the second leg at the Emirates Stadium next week. The following is what was witnessed in that match.
Manuel Trigueros scored for Villarreal early in the match. He scored in the 5th minute after receiving an assist from Samuel Chukwueze.
2. Raul Albiol’s goal.
Raul Albiol made it two for the hosts in the 29th minute. He got the assist from Gerard Moreno. They stayed ahead of Arsenal until the end of the match.
3. Arsenal’s denied penalty.
Arsenal almost got the chance of pulling one back in the 36th minute but they were not lucky enough. The referee had awarded them a penalty after Juan Foyth committed a foul against Nicolas Pepe. VAR checked it and the referee changed the call and decided to revoke the penalty.
4. Nicolas Pepe’s goal.
Nicolas Pepe pulled one for The Gunners in 73rd minute from the penalty spot. The penalty was awarded to Arsenal after Manuel Trigueros tripped Bukayo Saka.
5. Ceballos’ red card.
Arsenal’s Daniel Ceballos was sent off in the 57th minute after getting his second yellow card. He was sent off due to a rough foul on Daniel Parejo.
6. Capoue’s red card.
Villarreal’s Etienne Capoue was also sent off in the 80th minute. He committed a rough foul on Bukayo Saka and was shown a second yellow card which translates to a red card.
7. Bernd Leno’s saves.
Arsenal’s goalkeeper gave his best in the game despite their loss. He managed to make 4 important saves that denied Villarreal opportunities to find the net.
