On Wednesday night, May 5, Chelsea welcomed Real Madrid at the Stamford Bridge Stadium for the second leg of Champions League semi finals. Chelsea took the advantage of home ground and thrashed their visitors 2-0.
The match was a bit tight but Chelsea were bold enough to tackle their fierce opponents. This enabled them to book a place in the finals which will be held on 29th May in Istanbul.
The finals will be an all English affair as The Blues will play against Manchester City who already booked a place in the finals after edging out PSG in the semi final. What was witnessed in that match is as follows.
1. Werner’s opener.
Timo Werner put Chelsea ahead in the 28th minute after he headed in Kai Havertz’s cross. This goal motivated The Blues to snatch a win at home and progress to the UCL finals.
2. Mason Mount’s goal.
Mason Mount doubled the lead in the 85th minute. He received an assist from Christian Pulisic. This goal sealed their win as well as killed the hope of Real Madrid bouncing back.
3. Chelsea’s clean sheet.
Chelsea players were determined to win that match no matter what. They defended well and at the end of it their efforts paid as they kept a clean sheet until the end of the match. It was a better way to walk into the finals.
4. Real Madrid’s possession.
Real Madrid tried all their best to dominate the game. They were way above Chelsea in terms of ball possession. They controlled the ball well but their efforts didn’t count that night. They finished the match with a ball possession of 63%.
5. Goalkeepers’ saves.
Goalkeepers from both teams tried their level best to salvage their teams through making saves. Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy made 5 saves while Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois made 3 saves.
